November 2000

Stack's just completed their November 14th mail bid Auction, which included an exciting major mint error collection. This group of errors was assembled 25 years ago and represented some of the finest known examples, including some unique pieces.

October 2000

An employee of Littleton Coin Co. made an exciting discovery when they stumbled upon a 1999-P SBA Dollar struck on a Sacagawea Planchet. This coin, graded by PCGS as Mint State 65, was found in a $2000 bag. This is an example of one of the many recent major mint errors that have been discovered in mint bags and bank wrapped rolls.

A previously unknown type of error recently surfaced. It was first spotted in circulation by a woman sorting through her states quarters looking for errors. It has changed hands several times and finally found it's way to ANACS where it was authenticated, certified, and graded Mint State 64. It is a dual date (two different years) and a dual state (Massachusetts and Georgia) States Quarter.

September 2000

A new double denomination mule was just discovered and certified. PCGS authenticated and slabbed a cent mule with a dime reverse die. To date, this is the only one known. For more information click here.

Another unique discovery mint error was just sold on eBay for $23,100. The mint error sold was a Sacagawea Dollar planchet struck by Maryland Quarter dies.

It has been reported by several sources that the Federal Reserve is sorting and rolling almost all of the Sacagawea Dollars from the bins for distribution and circulation. Mint error dealers have noticed a sharp decreace in the number of mint errors on the new "golden dollar."

August 2000

This was the most exciting ANA Convention in years. Many major mint errors consistantly sold for over five figures. Three Mules sold in the $29,000 to $35,000 range (two in auction, one in a private transaction). At the Bowers and Merena Galleries Auction, hundreds of people crowded the room to bid on an unusual selection of major mint errors. With the discovery of the Mule, the publicity for the Sacagawea Dollar, the States Quarter series, and the convenience of the World Wide Web and eBay, mint errors have gone mainstream and are the hottest and strongest segment of the coin industry today. This is partly due to the fact that prices for error coins were dormant for twenty years and have only recently awakened. This trend is supported by thousands of new collectors who are purchasing modern issues and major mint errors instead of dated gold or generic gold.

This is a Martha Washington test piece struck in 1999/2000. The April 10, 2000 issue of Coin World featured an article about a Martha Washington trial piece. The article revealed that the "Martha Washington/Mount Vernon dies were most recently used during metallurgical die trial testing for the Sacagawea dollar."

This Martha Washington piece is a die trial experimental test strike. The Martha Washington/Mount Vernon dies were used to strike this trial piece on a 2.5 gram zinc-copper cent planchet. It was struck 10% off-center with a uniface reverse.

This die trial piece was discovered by a Brinks employee in a bag of 1999 cents. It is in gem mint state condition with red and brown toning. The obverse design of the die features a bust of Martha Washington facing right. In the right field is the inscription MARTHA WASHINGTON. Above the portrait is VIRGINIA and below the date 1759.
