1987-88 - Limited Partnerships / Rare Coin Funds

Rare Coin Fund

In 1987, Mike Byers Inc was one of the FIRST major U.S. dealers to offer SEC approved Limited Partnerships / Rare Coin Funds. We purchased major rarities including proof gold, early type gold, and gem mint state gold. Our ads soliciting investors appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Coin World, and other publications. Later on, many coin dealers followed our lead and offered Limited Partnerships as well.

3 Decade Old Catalog Found

From 1974 - 1978 I mailed out over 25 price lists of major mint errors. My all time favorite was my first catalog which was photographed, printed and distributed in 1975 by John Devine (Lonesome John) from Newbury Park, CA. It was a 26 page catalog containing the finest major mint errors with photographs, descriptions and prices.

3 Decade Old Price List Found

Fred Weinberg recently discovered, in an old and dusty file, one of my price lists on major mint errors from 3 decades ago!

It is a blast for error collectors to look at. There are many major errors listed that sold for a fraction of what they bring today.

For many, collecting mint error coins started out as just a small hobby. It is amazing to see how far this segment of numismatics has grown in the last 3 decades. It is one of the hottest areas in numismatics with thousands of collectors focusing on mint errors.

Michael Byers was quoted in Bruce Amspacher's Weekly Market Report:

Here is an excerpt from coinuniverse.com:

"Another excellent area of the market is Mint errors," Byers continued. "Now that the major errors are being certified they are universally accepted as an important part of numismatics. Collectors for errors are just like collectors in other areas of the market in that they're looking for completeness."

How do you "complete' a set of Mint errors? For that matter, what makes up such a set? "After the collector buys a Kennedy half dollar struck on a quarter planchet he wants one struck on a dime, a nickel and a cent planchet as well," Byers explained. Among the more interesting errors he's recently handled are the first certified Sacagawea dollar on a Susan B. Anthony planchet and (appropriately enough) a Susan B Anthony dollar on a Sacagawea planchet.
